Course Designs - Science and Social Studies

COURSE DESIGNS BY MRS. HOLLY MITCHELL – Grades K-3 SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES

The course designs I offer are specifically tailored to match the BC Ministry Learning Outcomes for Science and Social Studies. Course designs may be used for ages 4-9. I try to keep the design light with a literature base. They are organized according to Grade level but can be delivered across the grades for those that want to do more learning as a family.

Resources for the course designs are ordered for you and billed to Anchor. A learning package is sent by mail or email that corresponds with the resources.

Descriptions:

Kindergarten Science

Required Resources:

This course has a creation perspective and a focus on making observations, stewardship - recycling, comparing plants, comparing animals, the five senses, and a study of the materials that things are made of.

Kindergarten Social Studies

This course emphasizes family and community roles and relationships. Topics include: Identifying community groups, places, and technology; Change and responsible care of the environment; Different types of families and meeting needs; Rules and safety; Occupations in the community; Identifying community characteristics

Grade 1 Science

This course has a creation perspective and a focus on day/night and seasons, classifying natural or manmade, investigating plants, insects, investigating animals, forces, friction and magnets.

Grade 1 Social Studies

This course emphasizes more about family and community, early mapping skills, and Canadian symbols. The last assignment includes a mini research project about provincial or territorial symbols. Creating a lapbook is encouraged

Grade 2 Science

This course continues the creation perspective. Topics include: solids, liquids and gases; salmon life cycle; interactions between air, water, and soil; minerals; sea creatures and birds; land animals

This course emphasizes problem solving, culture, Canadian mapping and society, community and financial stewardship, and identifying God given gifts and talents.

Grade 3 Science

This course continues the creation perspective. Topics include: botany (detailed plant study); characteristics & movements of objects in our solar system; Biblical significance of celestial objects; constellations in seasonal skies; materials and structures.

Grade 3 Social Studies

This course emphasizes more Canadian mapping, Canadian people, places and events, BC artist study, BC community research, and landforms in Canada.
