Language Arts Learning Outcomes

Below are documents that organize the Language Arts learning outcomes sequentially over 3 terms for each grade level.  Use these documents as tentative guidelines for your Language Arts discussions, activities and focuses throughout the school year.

Reading Logs

A Reading Log is a neat way of keeping a record of some of the great books that you and your child read together or that your child is reading independently.  It is also an excellent sample to submit along with your child’s portfolio at each reporting period.

Questions to Use When Discussing Books with your Child

Many of the learning outcomes for Language Arts focus on using oral language as a means of demonstrating and extending learning.  One of the ways to add discussion to your reading times is to ask your child questions before, during, and/or after reading.  I have compiled a list of reading questions that are guided by ideas presented on the BC Ministry of Education website.

Consonant Blends -Activities

Sometimes when children are beginning to read they will have the individual letter sounds mastered, but will struggle with identifying the sound of a consonant blend.  The document below provides some ideas to help your child practice identifying consonant blends.

Writing Check Lists

One of the skills that you can start to teach your child in the primary grades is how to do a self-assessment on his/her writing.  One way of doing a self-assessment is by using a simple checklist to indicate what has been completed and/or how well it has been completed.  Below are two checklists available for you to use throughout the school year:  The journaling checklist can easily be adapted to use for any type of writing i.e. paragraph, story, report, etc.  The publishing checklist indicates all of the steps that can be taken to complete a “published” piece of writing.  Smiley faces or sad faces can be used by your child to indicate how well he/she feels each step has been accomplished.

Another Self Assessment Idea

The 3 Stars and a Wish self assessment can be used for any area of learning, but can also work as a goal sheet.

For families who are on the Individualized program (DLI), choosing a Math curriculum can be challenging.  Holly Mitchell and myself have worked together to create a compilation of brief reviews on various Math curriculums.  These reviews can be found in the following document.  Use this document as a reference when making Math curriculum decisions.

Supplemental Websites ~ ACE Social Studies paces 1001-1036  ~ Please enjoy using this list of websites to correspond with the Accelerated Christian Education Social Studies paces 1001-1036. I have previewed all of the websites, but please make sure to preview them again before showing them to your child.

Digital Unit Studies

Below are several Social Studies unit studies based on “tried and true” picture books.  The unit studies focus on Kindergarten to Grade 3 Social Studies learning outcomes and can be used across the primary grade levels. The unit studies are open-ended so you may choose to omit or alter some of the activities depending on your child’s age and grade level.  It is suggested that each time you sit down to complete a unit study activity, that you take time to reread the picture book with your child.

The picture books used in these unit studies can probably be ordered through your public library.  If you would like  a permanant copy of the book, then you can use your PO# and order it through Cornerstone Learning Resources Ltd.

Please note: Social Studies units will continue to be added to this collection as Mrs. Holder designs them.

Read Across Canada With Picture Books

Below is a collection of Canadian picture books that capture the essence of our country’s unique culture,  landscape and history.  Learning ideas are provided throughout the resource and the use of a large Canada map is strongly suggested. However, the wonderful thing about these picture books is that much of the learning will take place while cozied up on the couch – just you and your children and a wonderful book!

If you would like to incorporate a structured Health and Career curriculum into your child’s learning, then I would recommend A Beka’s Health, Safety and Manners. Here is a link to this resource at the grade 1 level: Health Safety and Manners 1 .

However, a structured Health and Career curriculum is not necessary.  Below is an outline of the general Health and Career topics for the primary grade levels.  You may find that several of them are integrated throughout other subject areas and/or incorporated into “real life” experiences.  Use the guideline below to help bring focus to your child’s Health and Career learning throughout the school year.

Bible  ~ Many Christian curriculums incorporate Bible throughout the learning.  As well, Anchor Academy offers scripture memory contests and Bible Reading paces to use as a curriculum.  Many families also participate in a family devotional time as well as church groups such as Awana.

Nutrition ~ The topic of nutrition can be handled through meal times and cooking experiences - no textbook required! :) One resource that is free and excellent to use as a reference is the Canadian Food Guide.  You can pick one up at your local Health Unit or access one online here:

Canadian Food Guide

Healthy Eating Reward Chart  (my kids loved this!)

Healthy Habits ~ Healthy habits include rest, physical activity, fresh air, drinking water, hygiene etc. Below are some related links:

Healthy Kids

Healthy Teeth

Safety ~ This can be covered through bike safety, fire safety, strangers, etc. Below are some related links:

The Buddy System

Sparky’s Fire Safety

Book Suggestions About Bullying

Bicycle Safety Teacher’s Package

Burn Awareness

Friendships ~ Learning about friendship is often experiential, but many excellent guidelines can be found throughout scripture.  Below are a couple of friendship activities that I have designed that can be printed off to use.

Friendship Activity Printables

Goal Setting ~  Have your child record 2-3 goals per term in a journal or  a goal chart and then review at the end of the term whether these goals have been achieved.

Finally, don’t forget to use your library!  In the junior non-fiction section of your library you will find many great books related to Health and Career topics.

Visual Arts

To help solidify the concepts learned through visual art creating, I have posted a simple activity called “Image Development Statement“.  This activity provides the student with an opportunity to title her “masterpiece”, explain the medium or material used, and describe what her work of art is about and/or the message that it is trying to convey. An image development statement is not necessary to complete with every art activity, but it is a valuable extension to include as part of your child’s art experience every now and then.
