  • Alison Poulter

    K-7 & Special Education Teacher

Trail, B.C. is currently home for our family. It’s my privilege to work as a support teacher for K-Grade 7 mainstream and Special Education students locally and throughout B.C. I’ve worked with the awesome team at Anchor Academy since 2010. My other teaching experiences include teaching in Uganda, and at a Christian school in Vancouver. When our children were younger we enjoyed spending several years home schooling.

  • Alison Simonetti

    Alison Simonetti

    Grade K-9 Teacher

I began my journey with Anchor Academy in 2015 when I enrolled my eldest daughter in Kindergarten at our school. My teaching at Anchor began in September 2017, teaching Spanish Grades 5 – 12, as well as students from Grades K-9. Prior to my teaching with Anchor Academy, I taught elementary school full time in Mexico for 7 years and gave private language lessons for many years. I also have experience teaching in my local BC public school district. I love spending time outdoors in God’s creation with family and friends, as well as reading, making arts and crafts, camping, gardening, and playing board games. It is a privilege to be able to walk alongside families in their learning journeys, helping to tailor individualized learning plans that allow them to fulfill their goals and get the very best that home education has to offer.

  • Amelie Gouws

    GR 5-8 French

I am originally French Canadian and grew up in Ottawa. I am married to Johan, a South African, and our three children were born in Britain where we lived for almost 20 years! Kelowna is now our home. We live on a small acreage where we grow lavender and where we love to sit around the fire and BBQ with friends. I have taught at Anchor Academy for three years and am really enjoying sharing my love of the French language and culture with our students and their families. In my spare time, I volunteer at a dance school. I also like skiing, camping, taking long walks with my dog and just simply spending time outdoors, enjoying God’s creation.

  • Carmen Howe

    Grade 10-12 Science Teacher

I have been teacher in Abbotsford for over 12 years and have taught many courses from grade 6 to 12. I feel that the online environment allows students to become engaged with learning in a different way than in a traditional setting. I have taught many courses over my career such as: English, Social Studies, Planning, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Math. I enjoy creating courses and helping students learn and engage with the material. The greatest reward as a teacher is watching students connect course material to their life, experiencing and learning in their lives. In my free time I enjoy cooking, running, and spending time with my three children and husband.

  • Cathleen Duffy

    K-12 & Special Education Teacher

The two years of teaching with Anchor Academy has flown by and what a blessing the year has been. I have worked with so many caring, earnest and encouraging students, parents, and staff. It has been a privilege to counsel families, watching children grow as parents support them through hands-on, multi-media learning activities. In the last 25 years, as well as homeschooling my son, I have had the pleasure of teaching in BC, Ontario and California. Currently the Duffys- Cathy, Derek and Elijah- live outside of Lumby, BC, where we have a large garden. Our garden gives us opportunities to work hard and enjoy God’s creation. We learn a lot about helpful garden insects. This is our second year selling onions and potatoes at our local CO-OP and also, our first year with our own greenhouse. It looks like we will be enjoying home-grown melons this year. So many blessings. God, through His grace, has given us educational opportunities all around us. It is enriching to capture them all. I look forward to a new year of sharing learning experiences with our Anchor family. Blessings, Cathy Duffy

  • Cheryl Epp

    K-12 & Special Education Teacher

Hi! Greetings from sunny southern Alberta! I have family in BC, though, and have visited often. Over my years of teaching I have had the opportunity to teach in a variety of situations, including Christian schools and ESL overseas. While I have taught online, teaching with Anchor this last year has introduced me to new possibilities in DL. I look forward to next year and the opportunity to serve God through Anchor.

  • Cheryl Foster

    Special Education 8-12

  • Christina Giesbrecht

    K-9 & Special Education Teacher

After more than 20 years as a classroom teacher and more recently an elementary school vice principal, I am excited to be a part of the Anchor team. As my husband pursues his call to ministry in Seminary, I considered it providential and a privilege to transition to Christian Education and the DL format here at Anchor. I am a mom to 4 adult children and 1 teenager. Our family loves being outdoors, and I enjoy hiking.

  • Colleen Eguia

    K-12 & Special Education Teacher

I live in Markham, ON, with my husband and four sons whom I have homeschooled for part of their education. I have worked in the DL school system for 13 years, and I am familiar with a variety of homeschooling approaches and resources. I enjoy learning about new resources, and helping families choose the best fit for their educational program. This is my seventh year with Anchor Academy, and I thank the Lord for the opportunity to work with new families. I hope to be a support and encouragement on their learning journey.

  • D’Atra Hunt

    K-7 Teacher and Special Education

What a blessing it has been to work with the staff and families of Anchor Academy for the past sixteen years.

My students range from kindergarten through grade 7 in our school’s mainstream and Special Education departments. It is my goal to build positive relationships with my students and help them recognize and develop their God given talents and strengths. Prior to starting my own family, I worked on call in both the public and private school systems before securing a full-time primary position at a private Christian school in Kelowna.

When my children were born, it became a priority for me to be able to stay at home with them, and although we had to make many sacrifices to make that happen, I wouldn’t trade those years for anything. When it was time to return to teaching, I was blessed to be offered a position with Anchor Academy. It is truly an amazing school and I consider it an honour and a privilege to be able to work with families as they educate their children at home. I live in the beautiful city of Kelowna, I have two adult children, two amazing grandchildren and a third on the way this summer. My family, friends an students are all very important to me, and I am truly thankful for each and every one of them. May God bless you and guide you as you embark on your homeschooling journey.

  • Edith Wall

    K-9 OL Teacher & 5-9 German Teacher

    Greetings from Northern British Columbia!

I am excited to explore the possibilities that Distributed Learning offers. I consider it a privilege to be part of the Anchor Academy community- Office staff, teachers, students, and parents. Guiding students to learn about the mysteries of the world and helping them master the skills necessary to fully live the life set out for them is a responsibility I do not take lightly. I am thankful for the teachers that enriched my children’s lives when I was a busy mother. Although Distributed Learning is new and exciting, the goal for teachers remains the same. I hope to assist parents in raising the children entrusted to their care.

  • Elise Nzoupet

    French Teacher

I feel very blessed to be able to work for Anchor Academy and be a part of a team of professionals who love the Lord and are committed to serving Him according to the gifts, abilities, and experiences He has bestowed on them. From a young age I have had a passion to learn languages. I was especially inspired by my French teacher in high school to pursue my studies in French after graduation and by my father to pursue a career in teaching. Over the years I have sought any chance I could to develop my language skills, not only in French, but in Spanish, Hebrew, Biblical Greek, and a variety of other languages to varying degrees of competency. I was a member of Wycliffe Bible Translators of Canada for 9 years, serving the Cameroon branch of SIL International from 2005-2012. My experiences during that period working as a linguist and translation worker further enriched my appreciation for the beauty and complexity of languages and cultures which only an amazing and creative God could mastermind. There still remains a deep desire in me to pursue my dreams and visions of learning new languages and/or mastering further the languages that I have already begun to learn. I am also very motivated to share this passion with young people, encouraging them, as well, to be awestruck and impacted by the great mind and compassion of God, who created and dearly loves every precious race, language, and culture around the world

  • Ella Knudsen

    K-12 Special Education Teacher

I have been a part of Anchor Academy and the SE Department since 2015 and am so grateful for the incredible staff and families I have worked with over the years! Anchor Academy provides an incredible opportunity for students and their families to work in a personalized, creative and Christ-centered learning environment and I am grateful to be a part of that. It brings me great joy when children are able to find success in their learning and to explore the gifts that God has given them. My husband and I live in beautiful Campbell River, BC, on Vancouver Island with our three children (ages 5, 3 & 1). When I’m not teaching, I enjoy hiking, gardening, spending time at the beach, sewing and reading. I look forward to another wonderful year with Anchor!

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. – Ephesians 3:20-21

  • Jessica Holder

    K-7 Teacher

It has been close to two decades since I began teaching with Anchor Academy, and during eleven of those years I was able to learn how to be a home educating mama a bit myself. I have four daughters who I still get to do daily life with, along with a multi-faceted husband who balances us all out. During the past decade, I have invested in reading the words and ideas of Charlotte Mason, acquiring a master degree in educational technology, and piecing together a couple of small children’s devotionals. By joining with families who have answered the call of home education as a part of their lives, I seek to build relationship, support, and encouragement in creating wholesome rhythms within our homes, producing days rich in learning and in life.

  • Karen Goertz

    K-12 Special Education Teacher

I continue to enjoy opportunities to grow with staff and students. It is amazing that I have the privilege to work with wonderful people each week. I believe that when we work as a team, we accomplish what is needed and what works best for the student. I appreciate how hard parents work to make their child’s life the best possible! Praise to an awesome God who loves us and each year helps me as I work!!

  • Karen Hunter

    10-12 SE Homeroom Teacher

I am delighted to be teaching in the Special Education department with Anchor Academy. I feel privileged to have this opportunity to work with students and families through Anchor. I believe in building relationships and trust, and recognizing the individual skills, needs, strengths, and challenges of each student in order to help them succeed. Working with individual students and their families has been a great blessing to me. I live on Vancouver Island with my 4 children and husband, and as a family we strive to live our lives relationally so that others are encouraged to know Christ. I enjoy gardening, camping, cooking, and listening to my children play violin and cello. I believe that our faith calls us to serve and I love to give my time serving refugees and homeless families in my community.

  • Katherine Kunyk

    Katherine Kunyk

    Grade K-7 Teacher

My initial education was with the University of Alberta earning my B.ED  majoring in Nutritional Science and minoring in Music.  I’ve always loved topics of health and the body, and I convinced my children to love classical music.  My daughter, Emily, is a violinist and is currently going to school online for naturopathic medicine. My son, Adam, plays cello, double bass and piano and is currently working at Fountainview Academy in the music department.  I homeschooled both my children and loved every minute of it!  Sadly, my husband and I are now empty nesters, but we’re adjusting, thankful to God for all His blessings.

I have a passion for Home Education as it gives parents an opportunity to tailor their child’s education to his/her needs and passions. We don’t teach to mediocrity, but to the mastery.  Our children are not assigned subjects but choose them.  By pursuing their interests and challenging them in those areas, they become lifelong learners; that’s the goal.  If that learning can be intertwined with Biblical principles, who knows what God can do with them!  Should I play just a small role in helping parents achieve this, I am satisfied.  All glory to God.

  • Kris Coombes

    K-12 Special Education

  • Lana Gotzy

    Grade 8-12 Teacher

I am grateful to have been working for Anchor Academy for over 17 years. I teach math and science for the grade 8-12.  As well as doing PE, Career Ed, Home Ec and Bible courses.  In my spare time, I enjoy being on the water,  paddling on a competitive dragonboat team and recreationally on a SUP.  I have a cat and a small dog who keep me company as I work each day, they are usually napping beside my desk. I have learned to trust the Lord daily for all my needs and am thankful for all the experiences he has blessed me with. I have been able to serve him with teaching in Kenya for a couple years when I was younger and have participated in many and varied mission opportunities throughout the years.

  • Laura Menagh

    K-12 and Special Education Teacher

Hello from the small town of Hope, BC. My name is Laura Menagh and I am a content wife, mom, daughter, grandma and friend who loves her life. I have been married to Brian for 34 years and we are the proud grandparents of 7 grandchildren!  I love to create and have many interests that come and go and then come back again. My current big focus is paper crafting and card-making. I love spending time in my studio creating projects to share. I even started my own company this year…Gardner Drive Card Company. My other big passions are music and sewing…more opportunities for creating!

I have been teaching since 1984 and have worked in both private and public schools, and as such have a wide frame of reference for many of the educational theories that have come and gone. Through it all, I have maintained this most fundamental belief: parents are the God-ordained initial and primary educators of their children, and I am in their lives for just a season. As a teacher, my role is to support and encourage parents as they raise their children while fostering joy in learning and a deep love for our Creator. Students and families are my mission field, and I am committed to praying for them, that they too would be able to share the Gospel with their world. I love working with kids of all ages and want to model a love of learning for them.

  • Martin Fromme

    K-12 & Special Education Teacher

In high school I discovered that I loved to learn and loved to teach. In fact, since I was five years old, I have been in a classroom as a learner or a teacher, in B.C., Liberia, and the Cook Islands. As I matured, I developed a desire to unlock the message of the Scriptures to people. So, here I am working with the Anchor Academy team – “training boys and girls to love and serve Jesus Christ.” In the near future, I am anticipating the victory of the reality of Creation and our Creator to replace the confusion of evolution, “Santa Claus science”, in the minds of many children in our province. As the apostle Paul wrote: “For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie….” (Romans 1:20-25) Please pray for the truth to be honoured in the education of all children.

  • Melanie Merke

    Grade 5-12 Teacher

I am blessed to have been working with Anchor Academy and its wonderful staff, in the whole range of grades, since 2009. I have enjoyed my refined focus on the high school grades in recent years, teaching arts and humanities. My husband, 3 boys and I live in Vernon, and enjoy the wonderful outdoors activities that the Okanagan has to offer. When not plugged in to my computer or driving my children to activities, I also spend time teaching kickboxing skills at a ladies gym, running, and developing my photography skills. I enjoy the opportunity to connect with and encourage students, and to see the difference a Christian education and

  • Melissa Wiens

    Grade K-9 Teacher

I am very honoured to work at Anchor Academy, supporting and working alongside families. I have worked with children since my teenage years and began my teaching career in 2011. During my early teaching years, I enjoyed working full time and as a substitute teacher within the independent and public school systems. Those years were a great opportunity to see different methods and models of teaching. I have been blessed with 3 beautiful young daughters and a wonderful husband, all of whom I spend most of my time with. I enjoy running, biking, reading, baking, pottery, gardening, travelling, and spending quality time with friends and family. I am an active member of our local church and I love to see God work through His people, for His glory.

  • Peter Wilmer

    Peter Willmer

    K-12 & German Teacher

I am a dad of eight children, and I live in Gibsons, B.C. When I have money, I enjoy building computers, listening to music and doing a lot of digitizing—audio and video. I like to talk to the Lord for at least a ½ hour every day. He’s a good listener. I firmly believe that my being a teacher and joining the staff of Anchor Academy was entirely God’s will. After twelve years with our school, I can honestly say that no other job would please me. All of the students, parents, colleagues, and staff have been a wonderful blessing to me, and I am fully devoted to serving them/with them till the end of my working days.

  • Robin Barrow

    Learning Resource Teacher

I joined the Anchor Academy amazing team of educators in the Fall of 2020. With God as my guide, I look forward to continuing my journey of supporting students to find success in their learning. My family roots and connections are in Nakusp and my husband and I are grateful that we were able to return here to reside on our lakeside family property. Some of my favorite activities to do are teaching (of course!) cooking, baking, walking, kayaking, biking, sewing and gardening. “Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.” Deuteronomy 32:2

  • Sheryn Midgley

    K-9 & Special Education Teacher

My name is Sheryn Midgley and this will be my second year with Anchor Academy. I began my teaching career in a small town in Alberta, took fourteen years off to raise my three children and then resumed my teaching career here in British Columbia. I retired from teaching in 2012, but failed miserably at retirement. God opened the door for me to again work with students and families. I feel so blessed to be working for Anchor Academy. I praise God for giving me meaningful work in a retirement setting. It’s the best of both worlds!

  • Spencer Coers

    Spencer Coers

I grew up in the Shuswap and besides a brief time living and going to school in Switzerland, this beautiful piece of the world has been my home. Before joining the amazing staff at Anchor in the spring of 2024, I had worked in the Shuswap region as a Children’s Pastor, Education Assistant and Church Planter. My wife and our family of six boys currently call Salmon Arm home. When I am not working or serving at our local church I enjoy playing board games, hiking, reading, spending time at the cabin or disc golfing.

  • Steve Cox

K-9 & Special Education Teacher, Learning Camps

What a blessing it has been to be a part of Anchor Academy! I’ve had 25 years of teaching experience in brick and mortar schools, which included 18 years of being an elementary principal in a Christian school. I made the transition to home learning teacher in 2018. I really enjoy working with parents to find an educational plan that best suits their children. My home is in Monarch, Alberta. From my house I see the majestic Rocky Mountain peaks.

My husband and I have been richly blessed with 5 children, two in-law children, and 2 granddaughters. God led me to Anchor Academy in 2005. Since then, I’ve been privileged to be part of this teaching team, marveling at how God had shaped this school community into what it is today. I have enjoyed my work with parents and K-7 students as we together seek to honour God through the learning that takes place.
